My sister and I are admittedly social climbers.
We always wanted the posh life--young, fierce and fabulous. We want to get everything in a snap as our rich classmates do. We want to travel to Europe, buy the latest Chanel bag, have an Angelina-Brad ranch, host yacht parties, don my Porsche and her Mercedes, be part of an It-Girl social circle and so much more.
I remember how my sister and I would spend lazy afternoons in our common room just imagining where we'd likely be if we have that dream life.
But the thing is we don't. As we grow and mature in life, we are starting to appreciate what we have and how in actuality our situation helps us to have a glimpse of life's different classes: the rich, middle-class, the poor. Hmm..it's not that bad to be where we are after all. It's exciting and thrilling, it pushes you to be better always and you get to meet people from different walks of life.
Consequently, I get interested in movements or brands that uphold the beauty in the ordinary (which is also one of the reasons why I started this blog Hence, the blog title!;D). Mainstream media is always about elitism and being up that social ladder. I share my professor's sentiment, "When will the marginalized ever be represented?" It's true. Material richness is so much glorified in media that the society is shaped to think that it's the best life possible.
So when I got introduced to this brand, Hghstrng, I have no hesitations whatsoever to write about it because essentially, my blog is about putting the commoners, the middle-class, the poor, the ordinary on the map. Why, you ask? Because we deserve it! <3
